Athletics 7, Diamondbacks 2
All-Star Gio Gonzalez cruised through seven innings while Conor Jackson and Scott Sizemore each homered as the Oakland Athletics posted a 7-2 victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
David DeJesus chipped in a two-run double for the A’s, who won their first series since sweeping the San Francisco Giants from June 17-19.
Gonzalez (8-5), who was named to his first All-Star team earlier Sunday, allowed five hits and one run while striking out seven. The 25-year-old has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last five outings.
Diamondbacks starter Ian Kennedy (8-3), who is eligible for the final spot on the National League All-Star roster as part of the five-man final vote, did not make such a good impression. The righthander was charged with all seven runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Oakland jumped on top with DeJesus’ double in the fourth and built the lead in the sixth when Jackson and Sizemore sandwiched two-run homers around a sacrifice fly from Jemile Weeks.
Justin Upton, who was named to the NL All-Star team as Arizona’s lone representative, doubled and scored.
