Mariners 6, Padres 1
Felix Hernandez pitched eight superb innings as the Seattle Mariners completed a sweep of their three-game inter-league series against the San Diego Padres with a 6-1 road triumph Sunday.
Carlos Peguero and Brendan Ryan each had two-run doubles while Miguel Olivo notched three hits and scored three runs for the Mariners, who collected 15 hits in extending their winning streak to five games.
Hernandez (5-4) halted a personal two-game skid by limiting the Padres to one run and six hits. The only run allowed by the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, who tied a career high with 13 strikeouts, came on Chris Denorfia's single in the seventh.
Ryan scored the Mariners' first run in the second inning and drove in two more in the seventh with a grounder that bounced off second base for a double. Peguero's two-run double in the third gave Seattle a 3-0 cushion.
Padres starter Tim Stauffer (0-3) surrendered three runs and 10 hits in six innings. The righthander walked one and struck out three while remaining winless in 10 starts this season.
San Diego scored two runs and struck out 35 times in the three-game series with Seattle.
