Reds 7, Diamondbacks 4
Mike Leake blocked out the bad news from his personal life and put up seven strong innings as the Cincinnati Reds snapped a four-game slide with a 7-4 victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.
Joey Votto homered and Paul Janish drove in a pair for the Reds, who avoided a sweep in the three-game series.
Leake (3-0) was arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing around $60 worth of shirts from a nearby Macy’s, but took his normal turn in the rotation, striking out six while surrendering three runs and four hits. The 23-year old’s attorney asked that Leake be placed in a diversion program for first-time offenders.
Leake allowed a run in the first inning but got some support in the bottom of the frame when Arizona starter Daniel Hudson (0-4) struggled with his command. The righthander walked in a pair of runs and allowed Miguel Cairo’s two-run single in the frame.
The Diamondbacks crept within 4-3 with single runs in the second and fifth, but Votto’s third homer in the bottom of the fifth made it a two-run game and Cincinnati opened it up with two more in the sixth.
