Cardinals 5, Nationals 3
Lance Berkman went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, including the go-ahead run in the fifth inning, as St. Louis beat Washington 5-3 Wednesday to earn a split in a day-night doubleheader at Bush Stadium.
Berkman, who upped his batting average to .339, drove in a run with a ground-rule double in the fourth against Washington starter Jordan Zimmerman (1-3), and then singled to shallow center to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Berkman, who signed as a free agent in the offseason to play the outfield, now has a team-leading 15 RBI.
The run support made a winner of starter Jaime Garcia (3-0), who allowed three runs - one earned and struck out four in five innings. Jason Motte, Eduardo Sanchez and Mitchell Boggs blanked the Nationals over the final four innings, with Boggs pitching a scoreless ninth to earn a save in his first opportunity.
Zimmermann, who is now 0-2 with an 8.65 ERA against St. Louis, allowed eight hits and two walks in six innings and failed to respond when the Nationals twice tied the game.
Washington won the opener, 8-6.
