Red Sox 11, Royals 5
Will Middlebrooks homered twice and drove in five runs and David Ortiz had three hits - including a solo shot - as visiting Boston snapped a five-game losing skid by outslugging Kansas City.
After belting a grand slam during Sunday's 17-inning marathon, Middlebrooks continued his hot hitting at the Royals' expense.
Middlebrooks deposited a first-inning offering from Jonathan Sanchez (1-2) just inside the foul pole in the right field for a three-run homer. He then capped a four-run uprising in the eighth inning with a two-run blast off the left-field foul pole.
Dustin Pedroia launched a two-run opposite-field homer, Cody Ross had a two-run double and Adrian Gonzalez rebounded from an 0-for-8 effort on Sunday with an RBI single.
The offensive explosion proved to be enough for Felix Doubront (2-1), who labored through 6 1/3 innings in order to give Boston's taxed bullpen a breather. Doubront allowed five runs on seven hits.
Alex Gordon had an RBI single and also drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk for the Royals.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Sanchez yielded six runs on as many hits in three innings to take the loss. ... Vicente Padilla induced a double-play grounder to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning. He finished the game with two more scoreless frames to pick up the save.
