Reds 6, Yankees 5: Joey Votto belted a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning and visiting Cincinnati held on to beat New York.

Homer Bailey (2-3) ended a four-start winless streak, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Brandon Phillips and Chris Heisey each had two hits and an RBI for the Reds, who sent the Yankees to their fourth loss in five games.

Yankees starter Ivan Nova (4-2) allowed five runs on seven hits over six innings to lose for only the second time in his last 18 decisions. He added a career-best 12 strikeouts.

The Yankees mounted a rally in the ninth against Reds closer Sean Marshall, pulling within 6-5 on RBI singles by Nick Swisher and Jayson Nix before Jose Arredondo came on and got Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson for his first save.

Nix had three hits and a home run and Russell Martin also hit a solo homer for the Yankees. Raul Ibanez added a run-scoring double for his 13th RBI in 11 games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Nova has allowed a homer in eight of his nine starts and 10 overall for the season. He surrendered only 13 in 28 appearances (27 starts) last year. His previous high for strikeouts was 10 against the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 4, 2011. ... Votto's homer was the 41st allowed by New York pitching. Only the Minnesota Twins (42 entering Saturday) have surrendered more. ...
