Mets 9, Padres 0

Johan Santana threw a four-hit shutout and Scott Hairston and Vinny Rottino homered in a four-run first for host New York, which has won four of its last five.

Santana (2-2) dominated the light-hitting Padres, striking out seven and walking none. He needed just 96 pitches to go the distance and win for the first time in four starts.

Following Andres Torres’ leadoff single and a one-out walk to David Wright, cleanup hitter Hairston drove a low fastball into the seats in left-center. Two batters later, Rottino belted his first career homer to make it 4-0. Mike Nickeas' eighth-inning grand slam capped the scoring.

Clayton Richard (2-6) took the loss, going six innings, and again got no run support. The lefty has received three or fewer runs in seven of his 10 starts.

Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin left the game in the sixth with a sprained right wrist.
