Phillies 2, Nationals 0

Darin Ruf hit a two-run triple and Kyle Kendrick pitched seven shutout innings as visiting Philadelphia defeated Washington, which found out it had clinched the National League East prior to the bottom of the ninth inning.

Just as Philadelphia was retired in the top of ninth, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated Atlanta 2-1 to eliminate the Braves and give the Nationals their first division title in the franchise’s eight years in Washington since relocating from Montreal.

Kendrick (11-12) allowed four hits, one walk and struck out four while setting a personal-best for victories. Jeremy Horst struck out Adam LaRoche with two runners on to finish the eighth and Phillippe Aumont worked a perfect ninth for his second save.

Carlos Ruiz walked and Domonic Brown had a one-out single in the second before Ruf tripled off the left-center field fence to give the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

Nationals starter John Lannan (4-1) allowed two runs and six hits in five innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Philadelphia 3B Kevin Frandsen had two hits for the fourth time in six games. … LaRoche has only one RBI over his last nine games and is one shy of his second 100-RBI season. … Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins (calf) missed Monday’s game and might not play again this season.
