Asdrubal Cabrera lined a one-out single into shallow right field to score Aaron Cunningham with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Indians broke a two-game losing streak.
It was the third hit of the game for Cabrera, who upped his average to .321. Michael Brantley also had three hits for the Indians.
Vinnie Pestano (1-0) struck out Vernon Wells and Erick Aybar to end the ninth after Justin Masterson allowed two runs in 8 1/3 innings.
Dave Carpenter (0-1) allowed three hits in one-third of an inning of relief.
Angels starter Jered Weaver scattered seven hits and struck out eight in six innings before giving way to Hisanori Takahashi, who allowed the two tying runs.
The Angels' offense was powered by Tori Hunter, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, his first, and two RBI. Hunter also threw out a runner at home plate.
