Tigers 5, Rockies 0

Max Scherzer struck out 12 in eight shutout innings to lead host Detroit to its third straight series win.

Quintin Berry became the first rookie this season to record five hits in a game and Ramon Santiago had a two-run single as the Tigers handed Colorado its 10th loss in 11 games.

Scherzer (6-4) gave up seven hits and didn’t walk anyone while beating the Rockies for the first time in five career starts.

Even a 53-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth inning couldn’t derail Scherzer from notching his third double-digit strikeout outing of the season. He struck out a season-best 15 against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 20.

Gerald Laird had three of Detroit’s 15 hits and delivered a run-scoring double in the second to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Prince Fielder stroked an RBI double in the third and Santiago capped the three-run inning with his two-run single to center.

Miguel Cabrera made it 5-0 with a run-scoring double in the sixth.

Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie (3-6) allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits in three innings and didn’t return after the rain delay.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Scherzer has struck out nine or more batters six times this season. … Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was scratched due to hamstring soreness. … Berry is the third Detroit rookie since 1999 to have five hits in a game – Curtis Granderson and Austin Jackson are the others. … Tyler Colvin and Marco Scutaro each had two hits for Colorado, which drops to 1-11 in interleague play this season.
