Tigers 2, Cardinals 1 (10)
Quintin Berry singled in the game-winning run in the 10th as the host Tigers took the rubber game of this interleague series.
With one out, Ramon Santiago and Jhonny Peralta singled off Victor Marte (0-1). Austin Jackson was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Berry. Joaquin Benoit (1-1) worked around a hit in the top of the 10th to get the win.
Prince Fielder walloped a 3-2 curve ball from St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse for his 11th homer, giving Detroit a 1-0 fourth-inning lead. The Cards tied it in the fifth when Rafael Furcal walked, went to third on Skip Schumaker’s double and scored on Matt Holliday’s sacrifice fly.
Lohse bounced back from his first loss in six weeks with seven strong innings. He allowed one run on four hits, striking out four and walking one.
Highly-touted Tigers prospect Jacob Turner, 21, making a spot start for the injured Drew Smyly, allowed one run on four hits over five innings. Turner, who grew up near St. Louis as a Cards fan, survived five walks.
Cards cleanup hitter Carlos Beltran failed to extend his 12-game hitting streak. St. Louis has scored three or fewer runs in 10 of its past 12 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers catcher Alex Avila, recovered from a strained right hamstring, came off the DL and went 1-for-4. He also threw out Daniel Descalso trying to steal second in the fifth. … St. Louis’ Allen Craig, who jammed his left wrist trying to make a diving catch Wednesday, went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts as a DH.
