Diamondbacks 6, Royals 4
Diamondbacks 6, Royals 4: Miguel Montero snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run double and finished with three RBIs as visiting Arizona took the opener from Kansas City.
Justin Upton drove in a run and scored three times and Chris Young added two RBIs in his first game since April 17 for the Diamondbacks, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since a three-game streak from April 29-May 1.
Willie Bloomquist and Upton led off the eighth with back-to-back singles off Kelvin Herrera (0-1) before the Royals went to left-hander Tim Collins to face Montero. The slugging catcher sent a 2-1 fastball into left-center that deflected off center fielder Mitch Maier’s glove, allowing two runs to score.
Arizona had taken a 4-3 lead with three runs in sixth, getting an RBI single from Upton and a two-run double from Young in the rally, but Brad Ziegler surrendered Alex Gordon’s RBI single in the seventh to knot it up at 4-4.
Ziegler (3-1) got credit for the win. J.J. Putz worked the ninth for his eighth save.
Humberto Quintero’s two-run double and Billy Butler’s solo homer gave the Royals an early 3-1 edge.
