Padres 5, Pirates 0
Jason Marquis pitched a two-hitter and Chase Headley drove in three runs as visiting San Diego notched its sixth straight victory and won in Pittsburgh for the 11th consecutive time.
Marquis (6-6) didn’t allow a hit until Travis Snider reached on an infield single leading off the seventh. He struck out four and walked one in his fifth career shutout while winning for the fifth time in six starts.
Headley has eight RBIs in the first two games of the series as he helped send the Pirates to their third consecutive loss and sixth in nine games. San Diego also snapped the four-game winning streak of Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett (14-4).
Marquis retired 13 consecutive batters before Snider started the seventh by hitting a ball up the middle that ticked off Marquis’ glove. Padres second baseman Alexi Amarista was unable to field the ball cleanly while dashing toward second base and the official scorer immediately ruled it a hit.
Pedro Alvarez ripped a one-hop single to the right-center field fence in the eighth for Pittsburgh’s other hit. The Pirates have been blanked nine times this season.
Headley drilled his 18th homer off the season in the first, drove in San Diego’s second run on a third-inning grounder and drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Cameron Maybin delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth and Will Venable smacked his seventh homer of the season in the sixth.
Burnett allowed five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings. He matched a season-high with 10 strikeouts and walked two.
