Angels 2, Diamondbacks 0

Garrett Richards pitched eight shutout innings and Albert Pujols homered as host Los Angeles won for the seventh time in nine games.

Richards (2-0) allowed four hits and four walks and struck out five in his third start of the season as the Angels blanked Arizona for the second straight day.

Richards departed after walking Miguel Montero on four pitches to start the ninth. Ernesto Frieri recorded three consecutive hitters for his seventh save.

Los Angeles shut out Arizona on Saturday behind Ervin Santana’s complete-game one-hitter. The Diamondbacks have been blanked in four of their last 12 games after not being shut out in their first 54 games.

Pujols led off the bottom of the fourth with a homer to left-center field off Ian Kennedy (5-7). The homer was Pujols’ 10th of the season.

The Angels added a seventh-inning run with help from the high sun in Anaheim. Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton lost Erick Aybar’s fly ball in the sun and it landed on the foul line and bounced into the stands for a ground-rule double. The misplay proved costly when Mike Trout laced a two-out RBI double to left.

Kennedy allowed two runs and six hits in eight innings. He struck out six and walked none.

Richards joined the rotation when ace Jered Weaver went on the disabled list with a back injury. He has allowed just two earned runs in 21 innings over four appearances this season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Angels shortstop Erick Aybar had three hits. He had a season-high four against the San Diego Padres on May 19 … Upton is 8-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak … The Angels had come up empty in 22 consecutive at-bats with runners in scoring position prior to Trout’s seventh-inning double … Jason Kubel had two of Arizona’s four hits.
