Athletics 6, Padres 4

Pinch hitter Jonny Gomes hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the seventh and Oakland rallied to beat visiting San Diego after blowing an early 3-0 lead.

Seth Smith also homered and Collin Cowgill and Jemile Weeks each had two hits and an RBI for the Athletics, who have won five straight for the first time this season.

The A's built a 3-0 lead on Smith's solo homer and Cowgill's RBI single in the fourth and Weeks' RBI double in the fifth.

The Padres cut into the lead on Carlos Quentin's two-run blast in the sixth against A's starter Tyson Ross, and took the lead an inning later on Will Venable's two-run double off Sean Doolittle.

Cliff Pennington scooted home on Luke Gregerson's wild pitch to tie it at 4-4 in the seventh. Two pitches later, Gomes blasted a 3-1 fastball from Gregerson deep into the left-field seats, snapping an 0-for-34 streak as a pinch hitter. It was Gomes' first pinch-hit homer since June 28, 2008.

The rally gave Doolittle (1-0) his first major-league win, and Ryan Cook struck out two in a perfect ninth for his third save. Joe Thatcher (0-2) was charged with the loss, allowing a run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Oakland has hit 12 home runs during its five-game winning streak. … The Padres dropped to 9-23 on the road. … A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes sat out a third straight game with a hamstring injury and is expected to be held out until Tuesday against the Dodgers.
