Padres 6, Mariners 2

Edinson Volquez took a shutout into the seventh inning and won for the first time since May 12 to pace visiting San Diego.

Volquez (3-6) allowed one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings and was aided by 11 Padres hits as the club notched its first three-game series sweep of the season.

San Diego scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings while handing Seattle its fifth straight loss.

The Padres loaded the bases on three singles in the fifth before Will Venable snapped a scoreless tie with a single to right field off Seattle starter Erasmo Ramirez (0-1). Everth Cabrera’s fielder’s choice plated the second run with another scoring on Dustin Ackley’s errant throw to first.

Chris Denorfia delivered a run-scoring double in the sixth to make it 4-0. Singles by Jesus Guzman and John Baker accounted for two more runs.

Volquez stymied Seattle on two hits over the first six innings before Ackley ended his night with a run-scoring single with two outs in the seventh. Franklin Gutierrez added a run-scoring single in the eighth off Dale Thayer.

Volquez was 0-4 in five starts since beating the Philadelphia Phillies more than a month ago. He struck out six and walked four.

Ramirez allowed six runs (five earned) and eight hits in five-plus innings in his first major-league start.
