Mariners 2, Giants 1
Justin Smoak’s walk-off single scored pinch runner Munenori Kawasaki from second base as the host Mariners won the rubber game of the series.
Kyle Seager and Jesus Montero opened the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles off Sergio Romo (2-1) before Javier Lopez entered the game and retired Michael Saunders. Smoak ended the game on single to left field, allowing Kawasaki to score easily.
The Giants, who left five runners on base in the last two innings, had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth before Tom Wilhelmsen (3-1) struck out Melky Cabrera and got Nate Schierholtz to ground out to second.
The late-inning drama overshadowed a terrific pitching duel between the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez and the Giants’ Madison Bumgarner, who was looking to win his fourth straight start.
Hernandez, who allowed 14 earned runs in his last three starts, turned in a solid outing while giving up one run on six hits on 114 pitches over seven innings.
Bumgarner, who retired 18 in a row after the second inning, deserved a better fate after allowing one run on three hits over eight innings.
Angel Pagan gave the Giants an early lead with a run-scoring single in the first before the Mariners answered in the second when Casper Wells scored on Dustin Ackley’s sacrifice fly.
Seattle, which snapped a six-game losing streak on Saturday, had runners at second and third in the bottom of the eighth, but Bumgarner struck out Franklin Gutierrez to end the threat.
