Felix Hernandez struck out 12 and allowed just three hits while pitching his sixth career shutout as host Seattle downed Texas.
Seattle's woeful offense scored four first-inning runs against Yu Darvish (10-6) as the Mariners won for just the second time in seven games.
Hernandez (7-5) didn’t walk anyone while reaching double digits in strikeouts for the 20th time in his career. The right-hander, who didn’t allow a runner to reach second base until the seventh inning, won his third consecutive decision while falling one strikeout short of matching his career high set earlier this season against Boston.
Kyle Seager had a two-run single to cap the opening-inning uprising. John Jaso and Michael Saunders also had two RBIs for the Mariners.
Seattle’s first five hitters reached on one hit, two walks, a hit batsman and an error. Jaso drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the first run, and the second scored on an error by Texas first baseman Michael Young. Seager, batting seventh, delivered a one-out, two-run single to make it 4-0.
Dustin Ackley had a run-scoring double with two outs in the fourth, Jaso hit a solo homer in the fifth and Saunders drilled an RBI double in the seventh.
Darvish allowed seven runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked four.
