J.J. Hardy went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Adam Jones added a three-run blast as visiting Baltimore defeated Detroit ace Justin Verlander for the first time.
Zach Britton (1-1) allowed one run and five hits in 5 1/3 innings while starting in place of an ill Jason Hammel. Jim Johnson allowed two runners to reach in the ninth before inducing a game-ending double play from Miguel Cabrera for his 26th save in 30 opportunities.
Hardy opened the scoring with a two-run shot to left field in the fourth for his third homer of the season against Verlander (8-5), who was 8-0 in 12 career starts against Baltimore prior to Tuesday’s loss.
Manny Machado doubled to start the fifth and Nick Markakis walked before Jones drilled an opposite-field blast to right off Verlander to give the Orioles a 5-0 lead.
Matt Tuiasosopo homered in the bottom of the fifth and Austin Jackson had a run-scoring single in the seventh for Detroit. Verlander allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings to break a four-game winning streak.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Johnson has converted 11 consecutive save opportunities. … Verlander has allowed five or more runs three times this season. … Baltimore recalled Travis Ishikawa from Triple-A Norfolk and placed RHP Miguel Gonzalez on the three-day paternity list. Ishikawa was hitless in four at-bats as the designated hitter.
