Yankees 4, Diamondbacks 3
Travis Hafner hit a pinch-hit go-ahead home run in the eighth inning as host New York erased a deficit and downed Arizona for the second consecutive night.
Hafner came on with the bases empty and two outs and lined a first-pitch fastball from David Hernandez (0-1) into the lower level in right-center after the Yankees had stormed back to tie it with three runs in the seventh. CC Sabathia (3-1) allowed three runs and six hits in eight innings and Mariano Rivera took care of the ninth for his fourth save.
Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer and A.J. Pollock added an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who squandered a two-run lead in the series opener Tuesday.
Wade Miley started for Arizona and cruised through the first six innings, allowing two hits and one walk without a run. Things turned in the seventh, when Brennan Boesch doubled with two outs and a runner on first and Miley walked two straight to force in a run.
Tony Sipp entered in relief and Brett Gardner sent a single into left to knot it at 3-3. The Diamondbacks had taken the lead on Goldschmidt’s blast in the first and Pollock’s sacrifice fly in the fifth.
