Red Sox 2, Padres 1
Pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes led off the ninth inning with a home run as host Boston edged San Diego.
Gomes made a rare pinch-hitting appearance against a right-handed pitcher and drove a 2-2 slider from Luke Gregerson (4-4) into the first row of seats above the Green Monster. Jon Lester allowed one run in seven strong innings and Koji Uehara (2-0) won in relief for the Red Sox, who have captured seven of their last eight.
Edinson Volquez allowed a run on seven hits in six innings before handing it over to the Padres' bullpen. Gregerson worked out of a jam in the eighth but could not keep Boston from its eighth walk-off win.
San Diego took advantage of one slow inning by Lester in the first, when Carlos Quentin delivered a two-out infield single and Chase Headley fouled off five straight pitches before lining a single off the Green Monster. Kyle Blanks followed and sent a first-pitch fastball up the middle to plate Quentin.
The Red Sox got back the run in fourth as Mike Carp led off with a single and came home on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s double off the left-field wall.
