Will Venable hit a three-run homer and Jason Marquis pitched 7 2/3 strong innings as San Diego jumped out early and held off visiting Atlanta.
Logan Forsythe, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, added a solo home run in his season debut for the Padres, who have won four of six. Marquis (8-2) walked five but limited the damage to two runs and five hits to win his seventh straight decision.
Jason Heyward hit a pair of solo home run but Julio Teheran (4-3) was knocked around for five runs on six hits in six innings for the Braves. Evan Gattis clubbed a three-run homer in the ninth and Heyward’s second blast made it 7-6, but Dale Thayer managed to get the final two outs to earn his first save.
San Diego grabbed a run in the first and made it 2-0 on Forsythe’s drive to center in the second. The Padres put two on with one out in the fourth in front of Venable, who blasted a 1-2 breaking ball over the fence in right.
Yasmani Grandal added an RBI single and Forsythe scored on Marquis’ double-play groundout in the seventh to make it 7-1.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Diego placed 2B Jedd Gyorko (right groin strain) on the 15-day DL. … Teheran took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his last start but could not make it two batters into the Padres’ lineup before Alexi Amarista sent a triple to center field. … Heyward entered the night with three home runs in 38 games.
