Alex Rios hit a grand slam and drove in five runs while Alejandro De Aza added four hits as host Chicago evened the three-game series.
Rios finished 3-for-5 and his grand slam off Atlanta starter Paul Maholm (9-9) capped a five-run third inning which helped the White Sox rally from a 4-0 deficit. Josh Phegley added three hits for Chicago, which took control with a four-run fourth.
Jake Peavy (7-4), making his first start for Chicago since June 4 because of a fractured rib, allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits in six innings.
The White Sox snatched the lead on Alexei Ramirez’s RBI single and Rios’ first-pitch grand slam deep into the left-field seats with none out. Brent Morel and Rios singled home runs in the fourth, and Jeff Keppinger added a two-run single to make it 9-4.
Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs while Dan Uggla added a two-run homer for the Braves. Maholm pitched to two hitters in the fourth inning before exiting with a sprained left wrist, allowing seven runs on as many hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rios, who was pulled from Friday’s game for not running out a ground ball, snapped a 120 at-bat homerless streak. He also dropped Evan Gattis’ double in the fourth. … Maholm has lost his past three starts, allowing 16 runs (15 earned) on 23 hits in 13 1/3 innings. … Peavy, who has attracted interest from other teams leading up to the July 31 trade deadline, threw 66 of his 96 pitches for strikes.
