Braves 3, Indians 2

Chris Johnson lined a game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as host Atlanta beat Cleveland for the second consecutive night.

Johnson, second in the National League in hitting but hitless entering the ninth, lined a pitch from Joe Smith (5-2) into left field. Jordan Schafer, who finished with three hits and two stolen bases, slid head first into home just ahead of Michael Brantley’s throw.

Craig Kimbrel (3-2) pitched a perfect ninth to get the victory for the Braves, who maintained their 13-game lead in the NL East over Washington. Mike Aviles homered and drove in two runs for Cleveland, which trails Oakland by four games for the final American League wild-card spot.

Schafer’s line-drive single to left with two outs and the bases loaded in the second scored Brian McCann and Andrelton Simmons to make it 2-0. Cleveland cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when Aviles launched a hanging Paul Maholm curveball into the left-field seats, and Aviles' sacrifice fly to deep right in the eighth scored Nick Swisher to tie the score at 2.

Maholm held the Indians to one run on six hits in six innings. Cleveland starter Justin Masterson was denied his 15th victory, surrendering two runs on five hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
