White Sox 8, Yankees 1
Alex Rios drove in four runs and Alexei Ramirez collected four hits and two RBIs as host Chicago halted its 10-game losing streak and spoiled the season debut of troubled New York superstar Alex Rodriguez.
Activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, Rodriguez batted cleanup and went 1-for-4 hours after learning he was suspended through the 2014 season due in part to his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal. The three-time American League MVP will appeal the suspension, which is slated to begin Thursday and amounts to a whopping 211 games, and is eligible to play until a ruling is made by an arbitrator.
Rodriguez, who predictably was serenaded with a chorus of boos before each at-bat, led off the second inning with a bloop single to left field but flied out to deep center in the fourth. He flied out again to deep left in the sixth before striking out looking in the eighth.
The third baseman was not the only member of the Yankees to receive punishment Monday. Injured catcher Francisco Cervelli and minor-league outfielder Fernando Martinez were among 12 other players who received - and accepted - 50-game bans.
Rios ignited a three-run first inning against Andy Pettitte (7-9) with an RBI single and plated two in the second with another base hit before drawing a bases-loaded walk in the third that gave Chicago a 7-0 lead. Ramirez singled in a run in the third and added an RBI double in the sixth.
Jose Quintana (6-3) worked 6 2/3 solid innings, allowing one run and eight hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The southpaw has yielded three runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts.
Pettitte was battered for seven runs and 11 hits in just 2 2/3 innings, the shortest outing for the veteran left-hander since he lasted 2 1/3 frames on July 18, 2010 against Tampa Bay. Vernon Wells recorded three hits and Brett Gardner lifted a sacrifice fly for the Yankees, who dropped to 2-4 on their eight-game road trip but remained 4 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the second AL wild-card spot.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees SS Derek Jeter landed on the disabled list for the third time this season Monday, this time with a strained calf. New York's captain has played in only five games in 2013. ... Wells started at first base for the first time in his career. ... Chicago LF Dayan Viciedo left the game in the middle of the first inning with a jammed left thumb. He was injured while diving for Robinson Cano's single in the top of the frame.
