Cubs 3, Athletics 1

Matt Garza gave up one run in eight innings to win his third straight start as visiting Chicago evened the series at one game apiece.

Luis Valbuena homered and Brian Bogusevic had a pair of hits and an RBI to lift the Cubs to their fifth win in seven games. Alfonso Soriano also had a run-scoring single for Chicago to back Garza (4-1), who scattered four hits and has allowed three runs in 30 innings over his past four starts.

Athletics right-hander Bartolo Colon (11-3) came up short in his bid to win his ninth consecutive start, allowing two runs on a season high-tying nine hits over seven innings to lose for the first time since May 9. He failed to register a strikeout for the first time this year and uncorked his first wild pitch since May 2009.

Oakland's Brandon Moss belted a solo homer in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Cubs tacked on an insurance run against Sean Doolittle in the eighth inning on back-to-back, two-out doubles by Dioner Navarro and Bogusevic.

Closer Kevin Gregg worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to record his 14th save in 15 opportunities as Chicago improved to 5-3 on its nine-game road trip.
