Brewers 5, Cubs 0
Brewers 5, Cubs 0: Carlos Gomez delivered an RBI single in the ninth inning and Jeff Bianchi and Rickie Weeks added two-run doubles later in the frame as visiting Milwaukee broke open a scoreless contest and snapped Chicago's three-game winning streak.
The Brewers' breakthrough came against Pedro Strop (1-1), who had not allowed a run in 10 2/3 innings over his first 12 appearances since the Cubs acquired him from Baltimore. Brandon Kintzler (3-0) worked a clean eighth for the victory.
Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija didn't allow a hit until Caleb Gindl's two-out single in the fifth and struck out seven over seven innings of three-hit ball. Milwaukee's Kyle Lohse matched him for six frames, allowing five hits and fanning six.
The Cubs had plenty of baserunners against Lohse, but stranded six through the first four innings - nine in all - and were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
The Brewers never threatened until the sixth, when they had two on with one out before Samardzija knocked down a chopper from Norichika Aoki with his bare hand and threw him out at first and struck out Segura to get out of the jam.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs observed a moment of silence before the game in honor of former RHP Frank Castillo, who drowned Sunday in Arizona at age 44. … Aoki went 0-for-5, ending his nine-game hitting streak. … Chicago left two men on in the first, third, fourth and sixth.
