Kevin Correia worked six strong innings and Joe Mauer had a pair of hits as Minnesota earned a second straight one-run victory over visiting Cleveland.
Correia (7-6) allowed two runs and three hits to snap a four-start winless streak. Rookie Chris Colabello earned his first major-league RBI and three relievers bridged the gap to Glen Perkins, who worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 23rd save and clinch a second straight 3-2 victory over the Indians.
Jason Kipnis hit his 14th home run for Cleveland, which failed to gain ground on the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central and remained 1 1/2 games behind.
Kipnis got the scoring started in the sixth when he came up with a runner on and took a 1-1 changeup from Correia the opposite way into the second row in left.
The Indians went to the bullpen in the sixth with the lead and came up empty as left-hander Rich Hill (1-2) allowed the first two batters to reach on a walk and a hit before Ryan Doumit’s RBI fielder’s choice cut the deficit in half. Bryan Shaw came on and surrendered an RBI single to Colabello before Kipnis bobbled a possible double-play ball and allowed the go-ahead run to score when Clete Thomas beat the return throw to first.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Indians starter Corey Kluber struck out seven and walked a pair while allowing three hits in five scoreless innings. He was lifted after 93 pitches with tightness in his left hip. … Colabello went 1-for-4 to improve to 3-for-24 in his first nine games. … Mauer has hit safely in eight straight games to lift his average to .323, second in the AL.
