Indians 4, Angels 1 (14)

Drew Stubbs belted a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 14th inning as visiting Cleveland outlasted Los Angeles.

Beleaguered right-hander Joe Blanton (2-14) started the 14th and retired the first batter he faced before Lonnie Chisenhall singled. Stubbs followed with his eighth blast of the season, a long shot to left-center field on a 2-2 offering that helped the Indians climb within 5 1/2 games of first-place Detroit in the American League Central and 3 1/2 of Oakland for the second wild-card spot.

Carlos Santana also went deep and Carlos Carrasco (1-4) struck out three over two scoreless innings as Cleveland improved to 5-3 on its nine-game road trip. J.B. Shuck hit a solo homer and Kole Calhoun collected three hits for Los Angeles, which suffered its eighth loss in 10 games as Mike Trout missed his second straight contest with a right hamstring injury.

The Angels needed just two pitches from Danny Salazar to take the lead as Shuck led off the first inning by depositing an 0-1 offering over the right-field wall. Cleveland pulled even in the seventh when Santana opened the inning by belting a 1-0 pitch from C.J. Wilson over the fence in center for his 15th blast.

Los Angeles loaded the bases against Matt Albers with no outs in the 10th but were unable to cash in. Hank Conger nearly ended the contest in the 12th, but Cleveland center fielder Michael Bourn made a leaping catch at the wall to conclude the inning.
