Dodgers 4, Reds 1

Dodgers 4, Reds 1:
Skip Schumaker belted a tiebreaking two-run homer and Hyun-Jin Ryu allowed a run and two hits over seven innings as host Los Angeles downed Cincinnati.

Ryu (9-3) walked one and struck out nine to improve to 5-1 with a 1.84 ERA at home for Los Angeles, which is a major league-best 25-6 since June 22. Adrian Gonzalez had two hits and drove in a run while Hanley Ramirez added an RBI double to extend his on-base streak to 35 games, the longest active run in the majors.

Jay Bruce homered for the second time this series while Chris Heisey posted his first triple of the season to account for Cincinnati’s only hits. Bronson Arroyo (9-8) gave up three runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings, failing to record a quality start for only the second time in his last 10 outings.

Ramirez staked the Dodgers to an early advantage in the first, when he followed Yasiel Puig’s one-out walk with a line-drive double to right-center. Bruce led off the second with his team-leading 22nd homer, but Ryu retired the final 13 batters he faced after surrendering Heisey’s two-out triple in the third.

The Dodgers moved ahead for good in the fifth as Mark Ellis opened the frame with a single and Schumaker drove a sinker from Arroyo over the fence in straightaway center. Gonzalez’s RBI single in the seventh increased the advantage to 4-1 and Kenley Jansen finished off the two-hitter with a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ryu’s victory tied him with Jae Weong Seo for the most wins by a South Korean pitcher in his rookie season. … Reds 1B Joey Votto went 0-for-4 with a strikeout, ending his 38-game streak of reaching safely. … The 36-year-old Arroyo became the 50th pitcher in major-league history to give up 300 career homers when he served up Schumaker’s two-run shot.
