Reds 4, Padres 1
Reds 4, Padres 1: Brandon Phillips homered among his three hits and Homer Bailey worked into the ninth inning as visiting Cincinnati snapped its five-game losing streak.
Bailey (6-10) allowed one unearned run on six hits without issuing a walk to win for the first time since no-hitting the San Francisco Giants on July 2. Chase Headley delivered an RBI double off Bailey with one out in the ninth before Aroldis Chapman recorded the final two outs for his 25th save.
Phillips gave the Reds an early lead when he led off the second with a solo blast to center off Eric Stults (8-10), who was charged with four runs (one earned) on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings. The loss ended the Padres’ four-game winning streak.
The Reds added three runs in the seventh when Zack Cozart singled to lead off the inning and scored on Chris Heisey’s two-out single. Joey Votto followed with a two-run double to right to end Stults’ outing.
Yonder Alonso and Alexi Amarista had two hits apiece for the Padres, who were held to six hits and failed to complete their first sweep of the Reds since May 15-17, 2009. Bailey, who struck out seven while throwing 116 pitches, improved to 5-0 in eight career starts against San Diego.
