Reds 3, Padres 2 (13)

Joey Votto hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 13th inning as host Cincinnati edged San Diego.

Jack Hannahan drew a one-out walk against Tim Stauffer (1-1) and moved to third on Shin-Soo Choo’s double to right. Ryan Hanigan was hit by a pitch before Votto lifted a fly to left to score Hannahan to make a winner out of Sam LeCure (2-1) and stretch Cincinnati’s lead over Arizona for the second National League wild-card spot to 5 1/2 games.

Padres starter Ian Kennedy, who retired 16 consecutive batters, took a one-hit shutout and 2-0 lead into the eighth before Zack Cozart reached on an infield single. Pinch hitter Xavier Paul followed by smacking a tying two-run blast well into the right-field bleachers.

San Diego loaded the bases in the second inning against Mike Leake and tallied twice on Rene Rivera’s sacrifice fly to center for the second out. Yonder Alonso easily scored from third, while Reds shortstop Cesar Izturis cut the throw off and tried to double Logan Forsythe off second but threw wildly. Forsythe dashed home for the second run.

Kennedy allowed two runs and three hits in eight innings in his second consecutive strong effort since being acquired from the Diamondbacks.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cincinnati went 15 consecutive innings without scoring until Paul’s third pinch-hit homer of the season. … SS Ronny Cedeno, recently signed to replace suspended All-Star Everth Cabrera, had three hits for San Diego, which left 15 on base and was 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position. … Leake allowed two runs (one earned) and six hits in seven innings. He also led off the third inning with a single for the only hit off Kennedy until the eighth.
