Cardinals 5, Marlins 4
Jon Jay scored from first with two outs in the ninth when Shane Robinson’s pinch-hit single preceded a throwing error by Miami right fielder Giancarlo Stanton as host St. Louis defeated the Marlins for the second straight day.
Jay drew a two-out walk from A.J. Ramos (3-3) and advanced to third on Robinson’s hit to right. Stanton’s lazy throw to the infield short-hopped first baseman Logan Morrison and skipped past him as an alert Jay dashed home with the decisive run.
Edward Mujica (1-1) pitched a hitless top of the ninth before the dramatic finish that represented St. Louis’ first walk-off win of the season.
The Cardinals never led until the conclusion and tied the game in the seventh when Matt Adams drilled a pinch-hit, two-run homer to right off Mike Dunn.
Miami had a 3-0 lead on Adeiny Hechavarria’s second-inning single and Morrison’s two-run shot to left in the third. St. Louis tallied twice in the third on Matt Carpenter’s run-scoring triple and Carlos Beltran’s single before Derek Dietrich went deep on the first pitch of the fourth to give the Marlins a 4-2 lead.
