Michael McKenry recorded a career-high four hits and knocked in two runs as visiting Pittsburgh outslugged Miami to even the series at one game apiece.
Neil Walker contributed three hits and two RBIs while Garrett Jones added two hits and knocked in a pair for the Pirates. Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton (3-2) allowed four runs, a season-high nine hits and struck out six over five innings and Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
Logan Morrison and Giancarlo Stanton each had three hits and knocked in a run for the Marlins, who were held to two hits over the last four innings. Miami starter Tom Koehler (2-6) gave up five runs and nine hits over five innings, throwing a career-high 109 pitches.
Walker and Jones delivered RBI doubles while McKenry added a run-scoring single as Pittsburgh jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Donovan Solano’s RBI single trimmed the Marlins' deficit in the bottom of the first, but run-scoring singles by Jones and McKenry in the third pushed the lead to 5-1.
Stanton lined an RBI double before Morrison and Placido Polanco each singled home a run in the bottom of third to bring the Marlins within a run. Walker’s RBI double into the right-field corner plated Starling Marte in the sixth and Pedro Alvarez added a two-out, run-scoring single in the eighth for a 7-4 lead.
