Marlins 3, Pirates 2
Jose Fernandez struck out a franchise rookie record 13 in eight strong innings and Giancarlo Stanton belted a solo home run to snap a tie as host Miami took two of three in the series.
Stanton was 2-for-3, including his blast that gave the Marlins a 3-2 lead in the sixth, while Ed Lucas and Donovan Solano added RBIs for the Marlins. Fernandez (7-5) allowed two runs in the second inning and five hits overall while not issuing a walk to outduel fellow 2011 first-round pick Gerrit Cole (5-4) and improve to 4-0 at home.
Russell Martin, who took Saturday off to rest a sore left knee, had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Pirates. Cole, the first overall pick in the draft, yielded three runs, four hits and struck out a career-best eight over seven innings.
Martin doubled home a run in the second and Clint Barmes' two-out RBI single made it 2-0 later in the inning. Cole cruised through the first three frames before Lucas slapped an RBI single down the right-field line and Solano lifted a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at 2-2 in the fourth.
Stanton gave Miami the lead with one out in the sixth, lining the first pitch he saw from Cole over the center-field wall for his 13th of the season. Fernandez, who was picked 14th overall in 2011, struck out five straight at one point in the middle innings and Steve Cishek put two runners on in the ninth before earning his 22nd save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tino Martinez resigned as Miami's hitting coach after the game amid accusations by players that he verbally abused them. ... Pittsburgh recalled C Tony Sanchez from Triple-A Indianapolis and placed OF Travis Snider on the 15-day disabled list with a toe injury. Sanchez is a Miami native. … Miami placed RHP Kevin Slowey on the 15-day disabled list with a right forearm strain and recalled RHP Steven Ames from Triple-A New Orleans. Ames was one of three players acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for RHP Ricky Nolasco on July 6.
