Charlie Morton pitched seven solid innings and knocked in a run while Andrew McCutchen homered as host Pittsburgh won for the eighth time in 10 games.
Morton (4-3) gave up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks, ending his night with three straight 1-2-3 innings. McCutchen was 2-for-3 with a walk and Pedro Alvarez added a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the Pirates, who pushed their lead to three games over St. Louis in the National League Central.
Rookie Christian Yelich recorded a pair of hits and Logan Morrison doubled and scored for the Marlins, who have dropped four straight. Miami starter Tom Koehler (3-7) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out a career-high eight in five innings.
Donovan Solano’s RBI bloop single broke a scoreless tie in the fourth and another run came home on Adeiny Hechavarria’s double-play grounder as Miami took a 2-0 lead. McCutchen cut the deficit in half with a one-out solo blast to center field in the bottom of the fourth for his 16th of the season.
Morton delivered his opposite-field RBI single to right to tie the game and Jordy Mercer scored on a wild pitch in the fifth as the Pirates jumped in front 3-2. Tony Watson pitched a scoreless eighth inning for Pittsburgh and Mark Melancon worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his seventh save.
