Cardinals 12, Angels 2
Jon Jay and Matt Carpenter each homered and drove in three as visiting St. Louis ended Los Angeles’ seven-game winning streak.
Daniel Descalso added a two-run double during a seven-run second inning and Yadier Molina recorded three hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who ended a modest two-game slide. Shelby Miller (9-6) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings to snap his own two-start losing streak.
St. Louis took the drama out of things early when the first three batters reached against Jerome Williams (5-4) in the second inning and David Freese pushed the first run across with a groundout. Descalso followed with his double down the line in right and Carpenter singled in a run before Jay sent a drive to center that just barely got beyond the leap of Angels center fielder Mike Trout for a two-run blast.
Carpenter capped his three-hit night by blasting a solo home run off Billy Buckner in the seventh. The second baseman finished a triple shy of the cycle while extending his hitting streak to 12 straight games.
Hank Conger hit a two-run homer and Trout singled twice for Los Angeles. Williams was charged with seven runs on four hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings.
