Padres 5, Brewers 3

Jesus Guzman drove in three runs, including two with a tiebreaking double in the sixth inning, as visiting San Diego defeated a Milwaukee team that lost Ryan Braun to a season-ending suspension earlier in the day.

Guzman hit a solo homer in the second inning and snapped a 3-3 deadlock with a double down the left-field line that capped a four-run sixth inning as the Padres won for only the sixth time in 26 games. Carlos Quentin smacked a tying two-run double off the right-center field fence earlier in the sixth.

Braun accepted a 65-game suspension without pay for violating Major League Baseball’s drug policy. The 2011 National League MVP previously had a 50-game suspension overturned when an arbitration panel ruled his urine sample had been mishandled.

Andrew Cashner (6-5) allowed three run and three hits in six innings and Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 18 opportunities. Jean Segura drove in two of Milwaukee’s three runs.

Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) gave up five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 frames. The Brewers’ franchise-record streak of 36 scoreless innings ended with Guzman’s homer.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Braun addressed his suspension in a statement, saying in part: “I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions.” … Padres RHP Jason Marquis will miss the remainder of the season due to a damaged ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. … Brewers CF Carlos Gomez (elbow) sat out for the second straight game.
