Padres 6, Brewers 2
Nick Hundley went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs while Tyson Ross pitched six strong innings as visiting San Diego defeated Milwaukee for the second straight night.
Will Venable and Mark Kotsay also collected three hits apiece, with the former hitting a solo homer, as the Padres racked up 15 hits in winning for just the seventh time in 27 games. The Brewers have lost two straight since slugger Ryan Braun was suspended for the remainder of the season as a result of his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.
Ross (1-4) struck out six while allowing one run, two hits and one walk in his first start since April 17. The only run he surrendered came on his own errant pickoff attempt in the third inning, while Milwaukee’s other run came when Khris Davis hit his first major-league homer off Colt Hynes in the eighth.
Venable’s fourth-inning blast off Donovan Hand (0-2) gave San Diego a 2-1 lead and Hundley hit a two-run shot in the sixth off Tyler Thornburg. Kotsay and Hundley added run-scoring singles in the seventh to boost the lead to five.
Hand gave up two runs and seven hits in four innings before leaving with a bruised throwing hand. The injury occurred when he was hit while attempting to bunt in the third inning. X-rays were negative.
