Brewers 3, Padres 1

Carlos Gomez went 4-for-4 with a two-run double and Kyle Lohse pitched seven strong innings to lead host Milwaukee over San Diego.

Gomez put the Brewers ahead to stay with his two-bagger in the third inning and Lohse (7-7) allowed one run and five hits while winning for the sixth time in his last seven decisions.

Nick Hundley’s third-inning homer represented San Diego’s lone run. Jim Henderson worked the ninth for his 11th save in 14 opportunities.

Milwaukee scored an insurance run in the seventh inning on an odd play in which Gomez took off toward second when Padres reliever Dale Thayer made a pickoff throw to third base. Chase Headley’s ensuing throw to second caromed off umpire Bob Davidson and rolled into shallow left-center field and Norichika Aoki scored from third.

Padres starter Sean O’Sullivan (0-2) gave up three runs (two earned) and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Gomez has 11 career four-hit games with four of them coming this season. … San Diego OF Carlos Quentin (wrist) was back in the lineup after missing Tuesday’s game and went 0-for-4. … The save was Henderson’s first since June 21.
