Nationals 9, Mets 0

Gio Gonzalez pitched a one-hitter and struck out eight while Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos belted three-run homers as visiting Washington claimed the opener of the four-game series.

Denard Span and Ryan Zimmerman led off the game with back-to-back home runs and Tyler Moore added a solo blast for the Nationals. Span went 3-for-5 and has hit safely in a career-best 20 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors.

Pinch hitter Zach Lutz led off the seventh with a single to break up the no-hit bid by Gonzalez (10-6), who walked only two for his second career shutout. New York starter Carlos Torres (3-4) yielded six runs and five hits over four innings, allowing four of the season-high five homers against the Mets.

Span began the game by lining his solo blast to right field and Zimmerman hit his sixth homer in seven games only two pitches later over the center field wall. Torres retired the next seven batters before Span singled, Zimmerman walked and Werth hammered the first pitch he saw over the fence in left-center for a 5-0 advantage.

Moore homered to center in the fourth before two-out walks to Ian Desmond and Adam LaRoche set the table for Ramos’ three-run blast in the fifth. After Lutz's single fell on the right field line, Gonzalez retired the next three batters in order in the seventh en route to recording his first complete game of the season and fourth overall.
