Everth Cabrera highlighted his four-hit performance with an RBI triple and Andrew Cashner tossed seven solid innings as host San Diego won the opener of a three-game set.
Logan Forsythe, Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable belted solo homers to pace the Padres' 14-hit attack. Yonder Alonso and Chris Denorfia each had two hits and drove in a run for San Diego, which posted its fifth win in six outings while handing struggling CC Sabathia (9-10) his fourth straight loss.
Eduardo Nunez had an RBI double and scored on Sabathia's groundout in the second inning. Curtis Granderson went 0-for-3 in his return from a broken pinkie for the Yankees, who fell four games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Forsythe worked an eight-pitch at-bat before depositing a changeup from Sabathia over the wall in left for his fourth homer. Cabrera doubled the advantage by plating Cashner with a triple before Denorfia's RBI single in the sixth gave San Diego a 5-2 lead and ended the evening for Sabathia.
Cashner (8-5) recorded his third straight victory after allowing two runs on seven hits. The 26-year-old did not walk a batter, a stark contrast from the five free passes he issued in his previous start.
