Blue Jays 5, Athletics 2 (10)
Blue Jays 5, Athletics 2 (10): Jose Bautista delivered a tiebreaking double in the top of the 10th inning as Toronto overcame a poor defensive effort to win two of three from Oakland.
Jose Reyes opened the 10th with an infield single off Jesse Chavez (2-3) and moved to second after catcher Stephen Vogt was charged with his second passed ball. Bautista followed two batters later with a line drive down the right field line and scored three batters later – along with Edwin Encarnacion – on Colby Rasmus’ single.
Reliever Casey Janssen (4-0) tossed a perfect ninth for his second win in four days and Brett Cecil pitched a flawless 10th for his first career save. Josh Donaldson and Jed Lowrie had two hits apiece while Eric Sogard scored both of Athletics’ runs on two of the Blue Jays’ four errors.
Toronto’s R.A. Dickey and Oakland’s Bartolo Colon each yielded two runs and battled to a draw through six innings despite shoddy defense. The Athletics picked up an unearned run in the third when Bautista sailed his throw from right field over the head of Brett Lawrie at third on Lowrie’s single, enabling Sogard to score from first.
The Blue Jays pulled ahead 2-1 in the fourth on Lawrie’s RBI single and a passed ball that allowed Rasmus to cross the plate. However, second baseman Maicer Izturis lost Brandon Moss’ two-out pop-up in the sun – the last of four Toronto miscues – helping Oakland score another unearned run as Sogard scored easily from second.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Oakland 3B Alberto Callaspo, who was dealt from the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday for infield prospect Grant Green, came on as a pinch hitter in the seventh for Sogard. He remained in the game at second base – his first action there since 2010 – and finished 0-for-2 in his Athletics debut. … Toronto improved to 12-5 against the American League West this season. … The Athletics lost for only the second time in Colon’s last 14 starts.
