Rangers 2, Cardinals 1
Rangers 2, Cardinals 1: Leonys Martin and Ian Kinsler hit RBI singles in the seventh inning as visiting Texas waited out a lengthy rain delay to complete a three-game sweep.
Kinsler and David Murphy had two hits apiece for the Rangers, who have won five in a row and moved one game ahead of the Oakland Athletics for first place in the American League West.
After rain delayed the start of the game for just under three hours, rookie Nick Tepesch and Adam Wainwright were locked in a pitchers' duel until Matt Carpenter led off the sixth inning with his sixth home run, giving St. Louis a 1-0 lead. Texas answered quickly, scoring twice in the seventh to move ahead.
Murphy began the two-out rally with a double and scored on Martin's single to forge a tie. After Cardinals shortstop Pete Kozma dropped pinch hitter Jurickson Profar's short bloop for an error, Kinsler plated Martin with a single to left.
Robbie Ross (4-1) notched the win after retiring the only batter he faced and Joe Nathan worked around a pair of hits in the ninth for his 25th save. Wainwright (10-5) yielded two runs - one earned - and six hits over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking one as he failed to become the first 11-game winner in the National League.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas placed OF Craig Gentry on the disabled list with a non-displaced fracture in his left hand. Gentry suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch from Oakland's Jarrod Parker on Tuesday. OF Engel Beltre was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to take Gentry's place on the roster. ... Tepesch kept St. Louis hitless until 3B David Freese delivered a one-out single in the fifth inning. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 frames as his winless streak reached seven starts. ... The Cardinals have lost three straight games for just the second time this season. They also dropped three in a row from April 27-29.
