Willie Bloomquist collected two hits and two RBIs while Chris Young pitched six-plus strong innings as Seattle edged visiting Detroit.
Cole Gillespie went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Mariners, who again were without second baseman Robinson Cano (hand). Bloomquist started in Cano’s place and delivered a two-out, run-scoring single in both the second and fourth inning.
Young (5-2) yielded two runs and three hits while striking out six before departing after allowing Austin Jackson's leadoff double in the seventh. Fernando Rodney allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth before striking out two and retiring Ian Kinsler on a grounder to record his 14th save in 16 opportunities.
Seattle scored two runs in the second on Gillespie’s infield single and Bloomquist’s base hit to left off Drew Smyly (2-4). Miguel Cabrera’s one-out solo homer in the fourth on an 0-2 pitch was Detroit’s first hit against Young.
Bloomquist drilled an RBI single to right in the bottom half to increase the lead to 3-1, but the Tigers got back a run in the seventh as Jackson scored on a wild pitch by Dominic Leone. Kinsler drilled a deep liner to left later in the frame with two on, but Gillespie caught the ball against the fence to keep Seattle ahead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cano has missed three straight games after playing in each of Seattle’s first 52 contests. … Cabrera’s homer was the 375th of his career, breaking a tie for 72nd place with Rocky Colavito (1955-68). … Smyly allowed three runs and seven hits in four innings while losing his third consecutive decision.
