Mariners 4, Tigers 0
Rookie Roenis Elias pitched a three-hit shutout as Seattle defeated visiting Detroit to win the three-game series.
Brad Miller homered and Willie Bloomquist recorded two hits and an RBI for the Mariners, who knocked off the Tigers for the second straight day. James Jones and Michael Saunders also delivered run-scoring hits as Seattle halted Max Scherzer’s six-game winning streak.
Elias (4-4) struck out eight and walked one in winning for the first time since May 6 and posting the Mariners’ first complete game of the campaign. Scherzer (6-2) struggled, allowing four runs and nine hits with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Endy Chavez led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored on Saunders’ one-out double. Bloomquist stroked an RBI two-base hit to right-center field in the fifth and came around on Jones’ single to center.
Miller went deep for the first time since April 11 when he hit a one-out shot in the seventh to increase Seattle’s lead to four. Elias induced Ian Kinsler to fly out to start the ninth and got Miguel Cabrera to bounce out to second before retiring Victor Martinez on a fly to center to wrap up his first career shutout.
