Marlins 3, Padres 1 (11)

Giancarlo Stanton lined a two-run homer with two outs in top of the 11th inning as visiting Miami edged San Diego in the opener of a four-game series.

Derek Dietrich, who knocked in the other run for the Marlins, reached on an error by second baseman Jedd Gyroko and Stanton drilled a 0-2 pitch from Dale Thayer (2-1) over the right-center field fence. A.J. Ramos (3-0) pitched two hitless innings for the win and Steve Cishek worked the ninth for his seventh save.

Stanton extended his hitting streak to 10 games with the game-winning blast and increased his major league-leading RBI total to 40. San Diego starter Ian Kennedy belted his first career homer and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings.

Kennedy homered into the left-field seats on a 2-0 pitch in the second inning, but the Padres could not add to their lead in the third after a leadoff double by Cabrera. Kennedy retired the first 14 batters he faced, striking out nine of them, before Garrett Jones doubled off the right-field fence.

Christian Yelich doubled with two out in the sixth for the Marlins and sprinted home on Dietrich’s ground single through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 1-1. Miami left the bases loaded in the same inning when Kennedy struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia to end the threat.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Marlins, who have the best home record in the majors (17-5), improved to 3-10 on the road. … Miami starter Jacob Turner rebounded from a rough start last Saturday after returning from a shoulder injury to give up only one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four in six innings. … The Padres recalled RHP Kevin Quackenbush from Triple-A El Paso and designated RHP Hector Ambriz for assignment.
