Marlins 3, Rays 1
Casey McGehee knocked in a pair of runs and Randy Wolf pitched six strong innings as Miami handed visiting Tampa Bay its seventh straight loss.
Ed Lucas recorded two hits and scored one of the three runs in the first inning for the Marlins, who snapped a three-game slide overall and won for only the second time in 15 games against the Rays. Wolf (1-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven in his second start for Miami.
Desmond Jennings collected two hits and an RBI as Tampa Bay lost its ninth consecutive game on the road and fell to 0-7 on its current trip. Rays’ starter Alex Cobb (1-3) yielded three runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts over six innings to suffer the defeat.
Two walks and Lucas' infield hit loaded the bases for Miami in the first inning before McGehee plated two with a single up the middle and another came home on Garrett Jones’ double-play grounder. Wolf retired the first 10 he faced, but the Rays pulled within 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI double by Jennings.
The Rays put two on base with one out against Mike Dunn in the eighth before A.J. Ramos came on to retire Yunel Escobar and Evan Longoria to end the threat. Closer Steve Cishek, who gave up two runs in the ninth to lose Sunday against Atlanta, pitched a perfect final frame for his 12th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: McGehee is batting a major league-best .426 with runners in scoring position after going 1-for-2 in that situation. … Tampa Bay RHP Jeremy Hellickson (elbow) completed a three-inning, 50-pitch simulated game in Port Charlotte, Fla., Monday and could make his first rehabilitation start this weekend. … The Marlins acquired RHP Bryan Morris from Pittsburgh on Sunday for a draft pick and signed RHP Kevin Gregg (177 career saves) to a minor-league contract Monday, pending a physical.
