Khris Davis tripled in the go-ahead run in the 12th inning to propel Milwaukee to its 10th win in 11 road games this season.
Davis, who was 0-for-5 with four strikeouts prior to his decisive hit, slapped a 1-2 fastball into the right-field corner against Seth Maness (0-2) to plate Jonathan Lucroy, who had led off with a double. Mark Reynolds followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3 and Francisco Rodriguez closed things out in the ninth, sealing his major league-leading 12th save by retiring Jhonny Peralta on a fly ball with runners on first and second.
Matt Holliday and Allen Craig hit sixth-inning solo homers for St. Louis, which squandered a bases-loaded situation in the ninth and a leadoff double by Holliday in the 10th. The Brewers' bullpen pitched six scoreless innings, including two frames by Zach Duke (2-0), to extend the best record in the majors to 19-7.
Milwaukee tied the game with three runs in the seventh inning, with Lyle Overbay and Scooter Gennett delivering RBI singles against Cardinals starter Michael Wacha before Pat Neshek came on and hit Aramis Ramirez with a pitch to force in the tying run. The Brewers' rally bailed out Yovani Gallardo (three runs in six innings), who entered 1-11 with a 6.46 ERA lifetime against the Cardinals.
Gennett and Elian Herrera each finished with two hits for the Brewers, who played without Ryan Braun (chest) and Jean Segura (face) for the second straight day. Wacha navigated Milwaukee's short-handed lineup for most of the night but ended up surrendering three runs and eight hits with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 frames.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals manager Mike Matheny challenged a bang-bang call at first base in which Gallardo was ruled safe to open the sixth inning. The call was upheld via replay, dropping Matheny to 0-for-2 on challenges this season. ... Milwaukee's bench grew even thinner when Ramirez left in the seventh with a sore elbow. ... Holliday finished a triple shy of the cycle while Craig, Yadier Molina and Mark Ellis each notched a pair of hits for St. Louis.
