Nationals 4, Brewers 2 (16)

Ryan Zimmerman belted a two-run homer in the 16th inning to highlight his three-hit performance as visiting Washington recorded its fourth consecutive victory.

After Adam LaRoche ripped a one-out single in the 16th, Zimmerman deposited a 2-0 fastball from Mike Fiers (0-1) over the wall in center field. The blast was Zimmerman's third of the season and first of his career in extra innings.

Anthony Rendon launched a solo homer in the eighth inning to cap his three-hit effort for the Nationals, who have won six of their last eight contests. Seven relievers combined to toss 10 scoreless innings, with Tyler Clippard (5-2) picking up the win after recording one such frame while Rafael Soriano retired the side in the 16th for his 18th save.

Ryan Braun slapped a two-run single among his two hits for the Brewers, who have dropped two straight following a four-game winning streak. Jonathan Lucroy reached base on four occasions, although two were a result of being intentionally walked.

After Washington scratched for a run, Braun gave Milwaukee the lead in the fifth inning after ripping a shot past diving shortstop Ian Desmond to plate Mark Reynolds and Jean Segura. Rendon answered by jumping on a 1-1 fastball from reliever Will Smith and sending it over the wall in right-center field.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The 16-inning contest was the longest for the Nationals since the franchise moved to the nation's capital in 2005. Washington had played three 15-inning games. ... Rendon's blast forced RHP Yovani Gallardo to settle for a no-decision after the hurler allowed one run on four hits in six innings. Washington RHP Jordan Zimmermann, however, avoided his third consecutive hard-luck loss after permitting two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. ... Werth was a staggering 14-for-20 in his previous six games in Milwaukee before going 0-for-7 on Tuesday, while Brewers CF Carlos Gomez (0-for-6) failed to record a hit for the second straight contest after piecing together a career-best 18-game hitting streak.
